Halloween is a time for pretending to be someone else. But what if you've been doing that your whole life? Do you change your personality to fit in? Hide your true feelings to keep the peace? Worry about what people think of you? Try to be more like someone else so you'll be liked? What if some of the things you believe are your personality are actually patterns you learned to survive?
Thousands of years ago, belonging to a group could mean the difference between life and death. Our need for acceptance runs deep. And as children, we learn which behaviours bring approval and which ones bring disapproval. So we adapt, and learn to please, perform, stay quiet, or become whoever others seem to want us to be. Eventually, the mask can feel like our real face. And even when we want to take it off, the thought of disappointing someone or being rejected can feel frightening.
You may be trying to change a pattern that your subconscious mind learned to protect you. In my work as an Emotional Healing Practitioner, I help people explore the deeper emotional roots of these patterns and work toward lasting change. Who might you be if you no longer felt you had to be someone else to be accepted?
