What Does Hypnosis Actually Feel Like?

People are often curious about what hypnosis actually feels like. They may wonder if they will fall asleep, feel strange, lose track of time, or suddenly know that they have entered some completely different state.

The funny thing is that hypnosis can feel very ordinary. You may simply feel relaxed and comfortable while listening to my voice, with your attention becoming more focused on the meaning of the words.

You may have already experienced something similar. Have you ever been reading a really good book and suddenly realized you have been sitting there for an hour? Or listened to a favourite song and found yourself completely caught up in the music? Your body may be sitting in one place while your mind is somewhere else.

Hypnosis can have that same feeling of becoming absorbed in an experience. You may notice your breathing slow down, your body become heavier or lighter, or your thoughts become quieter. You may picture things easily in your mind, remember something from the past, or simply enjoy listening without doing very much at all.

There is no one perfect way to experience hypnosis. Some people notice lots of sensations, while someone else may simply think, “I feel really relaxed.” Both experiences are completely fine.

One of my favourite parts of this work is using my voice to guide someone through that experience. I have always loved reading aloud. I homeschooled my children for many years, so reading stories together was a very familiar part of our days, and later I began reading to seniors at a residence as well.

I have always enjoyed the sound and rhythm of reading, and I think that has become a natural part of the way I work with hypnosis. I also spent many years acting in local theatre, where I learned how much expression, tone, pacing, and the sound of your voice can affect the way people experience a story.

During a hypnosis session, I am helping you direct your attention toward what you want. We might use relaxation, imagination, memories, words, or pictures in your mind to support the work we are doing.

This is also why I often describe hypnosis as the icing on the cake of the healing work. We may have spent time talking, learning, releasing emotions, and making changes, and then we finish with a beautiful period of relaxation where you can simply listen and allow your mind to focus on what you want to take with you.

Many clients tell me afterward that hypnosis was one of their favourite parts of the whole experience. I think part of the reason is that people rarely give themselves permission to stop, relax, and let someone else do the guiding for a little while. And they also love what the words mean to them.

You do not have to wonder whether you will “go under” or whether you will do hypnosis correctly. You simply get comfortable, listen to my voice, and allow yourself to experience it in your own way.

And if you have ever enjoyed getting lost in a good book, a beautiful piece of music, or a story you could hardly put down, you may already have a pretty good idea of what it feels like.
