Parts Integration

Have you ever felt like two different parts of you were pulling you in different directions? One part wants to move forward, while another part wants to hold on. One part knows what you want, while another part seems to have a completely different idea. Maybe you have said, “Part of me still loves him, but another part knows I need to leave.” Or, “I want to trust again, but something inside me is afraid.” These inner conflicts can leave you feeling confused, stuck, and exhausted.

Parts Integration is an NLP technique that helps us work with these inner conflicts. You may also hear it called parts work. We develop different parts of ourselves through the experiences we have in life. A painful experience, a bad relationship, or years of trying to meet other people's expectations can leave a part of us carrying certain feelings, beliefs, and experiences.

Think about a woman who has been replaced by another woman in a relationship. She may feel like who she was is gone. Someone else is now in the place she once held, and she may have to find out who she is now without the role, relationship, and identity she once had. Those parts may need to be integrated.

Another example is the difference between the true you and the you shaped by expectations. There may be a part of you that knows who you really are and what you truly want, while another part has spent years learning who you are supposed to be so you can be loved, accepted, or approved of.

Parts Integration gives us a way to listen to these different parts, and understand what each one wants, and what it is trying to do for us. When the parts are understood, they can begin to come together rather than pulling you in different directions.

I learned this for myself during my NLP training. Following the long day where we were taught this technique, I went to a McDonald's parking lot, and practiced the process on myself. I worked through seven different conflicts, one after another. It took about two hours. It was one of the most powerful healing experiences I ever had. I could feel things coming together inside me in a way that simply thinking about my problems had never accomplished. And ever since, I have also been witness to amazing integrations in my clients.

That personal healing experience stayed with me, and I am thankful to have Parts Integration as part of the work I do. I believe it can be the missing piece in a lot of healing work. Pun intended. Lol.
